F. Scott Fitzgeralds Personl Influences on The Great Gatsby

â€Å"Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.† (Fitzgerald, 1925). The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published in 1925, and takes place in 1922. The novel greatly exemplifies the time period that it takes place in, known as â€Å"The Roaring Twenties† or â€Å"The Jazz Age†. One way of exemplification is prohibition and the Volstead Act. According to David J. Hanson from Potsdam.edu, the Volstead Act, which took place in 1919, established National Prohibition of alcoholic beverages (Hanson, 2013). Fitzgerald made his characters Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby very similar to himself. Like Gatsby, Fitzgerald too was in love with a girl of a higher social class. She had money, and he didn’t. Daisy told Gatsby that rich girls don’t marry poor boys, so he went and made some money and got rich, then went back for Daisy. Both of them had a ‘golden girl’ that lik ed them, but wouldn’t marry them because they had no money. They both fell in love with their golden girl while stationed in the military. Fitzgerald wrote his book in order to make money to impress his soon to be wife, Zelda. He didn’t even want to sign a deal with the publishers to make a percentage of the profits, he just took some money up front and let the publishers keep all the money that the book made. Cassandra Bingaman Mr. Strausbaugh British Literature 18 September 2015 Beowulf and the Three Battles According to Michael Delahoyde Kings should display the heroic ideal and be known for an extraordinary and courageous feat or for success in war, all preceded by some boasting. In the epic poem, Beowulf eventually became king and even before that time, the people looked up to him for his bravery and courage. Beowulf bragged often and although battling certain enemies seemed grueling, he kept his confidence high and went forward. People saw him as a hero for he never gave up. Beowulf proves his heroism through the defeat of Grendel, Grendel s mother, and the dragon. The fight with Grendel shows both Beowulf s power and strength. Although anyone who ever fought Grendel wore armor and used weapons, Beowulf showed bravery by using absolutely nothing. Ultimately, he was characterized as the strongest man ever during the fight and freely bragged about his strength. As stated in the text, The captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he has ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth, (749-752). Grendel was notably being overpowered. He was overwhelmed, manacled tight by the man who of all men was foremost and strongest in the days of his life, (787-789). A Pastiche continuing from Part I of Franz Kafkas Metamorphosis Essay The following passage is a scene between Grete and her father her mother will not be in this scene. Her father is struggling to comprehend Gregors metamorphosis but is more concerned about how the family will survive monetarily whilst Grete quietly mourns her brothers transformation. My intention was to capture the boorishness of Gregors father which we see later on in the story when he flings an apple at Gregor, fatally wounding him. Gregors father is a somewhat defeated man due to the failure of his business and so, whilst his son works at a demoralising place with an unsatisfactory job, he lounges about. This may be due to his ill health but after Gregors transformation he does manage to regain his confidence and desire to work. This is partly represented by his smart blue uniform with gold buttons replacing his old overcoat. Indeed the gold buttons could be seen as a sign of his replenished sense of pride. Grete has a good relationship with her brother and cared for him deeply, as seen early on in the text. Gregor is locked in the room and she asks him, Oh Gregor? Are you not well? Can I bring you anything? Despite initially being fearful of the cockroach, she takes on the role of Gregors carer. Gregor believes that the reasons for Grete assisting him are a mixture of devotion, due to the memory of their relationship, and her youthfulness. Grete flourishes as a person and displays her ability to take on the responsibility of dealing with a dilemma such as Gregor. This is unlike her parents who, in the text, seem incapable of dealing with the issue themselves. In the passage we also see Grete with her violin. This is a symbol of the strong relationship between Grete and her brother since he admires her music to the point where, as it states later on in the text, he wishes to send her to the Conservatorium. This seems to be the only way in which both Gregor and Grete rebel as, their pare nts disliked even innocent references to the Conservatorium. My aim is to capture Kafkas use of simple and clear prose. The resonance of the declarative opening line, When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself changed into a monstrous cockroach in his bed, is perhaps the only startling or unexpected line in Metamorphosis and my pastiche has been written to continue with this lack of eventfulness. In the text speech is always followed by actions and so I have tried to emulate this narrative style of writing in my characterisation of Grete and her father. Kafka employs this style of writing through the use of an omniscient third-person. This is particularly true in regards to Gregor but in my passage I employ this technique for Grete and her father. The opening paragraph is also very long so as to annunciate the characters confusion, as Kafka does for Gregor who remains in a constant state of confusion due to his state. In this pastiche I have also touched on a theme that appears in Metamorphosis; that of the effect of financial hardships on relationships. In the text, Gregor is merely seen as a means to make money and so when he undergoes a metamorphosis, he is treated with contempt. In my passage I have shown this contempt through Gregors father as he is the main reason why Gregor had to do a job he hates in the first place. Furthermore, I will highlight the fact that income is the most important issue according his father and this makes up a large part of his dialogue with Grete in the pastiche. There was a cobweb in one of the corners. Looking at the cobweb she once again saw the repulsive image of the cockroach which had replaced her brother. Finally looking at her father, she studied his broken face and began to weep. But her tears were not for her father but for her brother whom she imagined was most likely bewildered and in pain, after her fathers brutish attack. Her mind then turned to the image of her mother fainting after the shock of seeing her son and sole breadwinner turned into a monstrous state. No doubt she would blame herself and her husband for finally destroying Gregor. Grete herself knew that he was always never content with having to spend his days travelling, selling goods of little use. But no, that wasnt her brother, it couldnt be. What man wakes up to find that he has turned into a cockroach? Perhaps it was all an elaborate joke though Gregor was never one to joke. Perhaps he had fled and instead replaced himself with a cockroach, in rebellion for their over-reliance on him. But she had seen that vile thing and it could only have been her brother. Of course, she could not comprehend a single thing that came out of his mouth but still that cockroach was surely Gregor. The way it pursued that clerk was Gregor through and through. Always trying to reason, always having to plead his case. Grete removed her hand from her fathers shoulder and walked to her drawer. From it she took out the medicine which she kept for her mother and went to her bedroom. After giving her the medicine Grete went back to her room to find her father pacing the room. Since that cockroach is of no use, we will have to find some way to forge an income, he said calmly. God knows what caused this monstrosity to be bestowed on our family but we must not allow this burden to be the ruin of us. Grete remained silent and this annoyed her father. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come. Perhaps I can start afresh, all of us in fact. Mr Samsa looked at his daughter and with mild regret, wished that she had been born a man. You could perhaps put down that violin and find some work, he said pointedly. It is about time that you helped to reduce our debt. Grete didnt bother to conceal her raised eyebrow and for a second Mr Samsa considered throwing an object at his daughter. Deciding against this, however, he merely took her violin out of its case and stared at it. Grete eyed her father and said, Father, as repulsive as that thing may be, it is my brother. Please do not strike it again. At this her father scoffed and stared in Gretes direction, hands clasped together. Disrespect of Human Rights Essay Disrespect of Human Rights Essay The American community, especially in the wake of the atrocities on September 11th, has been wholly absorbed by images broadcast on network television. Unfortunately, many issues have been fully discounted. I feel that at least one issue must be addressed to a larger extent on a national level. The violation of human rights abroad should be given more attention, especially in civil conflicts. I feel that this moral issue is central to many of the deepest interests of the American public. The loss of the United States seat on the United Nations Department of Human Rights brought some focus into this arena as journalists dismissed the removal as contradictory, unjust, and flat out ignorant. They somewhat addressed human rights concerns, but did not deal directly with any regimes. The main brunt of the argument was the United States should be allowed to come back. That debate has cooled, while the coverage of human rights has cooled even more. Publications such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International give excellent coverage of these abuses. Unfortunately, they are solely limited to their respective websites and are only occasionally referenced by national media source like CNN. Nearly everyone in America can remember at least one human rights violation in their time: Tiananmen Square, the Hutu/Tutsi massacres, or even Slobodan Milosevics ethnic cleansing in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. It seems that the whole array of human rights issues is universally overlooked, but especially by American television broadcasting companies. I feel the violence in Zimbabwe under the ruthless, power hungry Robert Mugabe must be more publicly discussed. Also, there are violations in Angola, Sierra Leone, Cuba, China, Mexico, Brazil, and even the American prison system. I feel a simple catch phrase must be remembered: Humans abroad are being massacred and do not even have some of the most fundamental rights. I concede, as Michael Ignatieff of Harvard University writes, that individualism inside America has probably shaped my views on human rights. Many Middle Eastern regimes are critical of the issue of human rights as a universal norm. However, as Ignatieff continues, human rights are still necessary worldwide to protect individuals from the abuses of group authority. As an individual, I realize that I cannot cause sweeping policy changes. I do not expect a sweeping protest as a result of increased attention nor immediate action by the Congress. Some may see my views as extremist or overly idealistic. However, I still feel it is imperative to address these concerns. I feel that paying more attention to human rights abuses and the lack of human rights in many governments, including the United States itself must be a priority. I feel it is imperative to address this issue on a national level. Not everyone is removed from the issue of human rights abuses, but I still feel that the greater part of America is inadequately aware of the basic status quo of the their fellow world citizens. Violations of human rights deserve far more than simple attention, but attention is certainly a start. Although the staff was quite familiar with its format, it contained several identifiable flaws.  ·It had been typeset and printed internally.  ·New JCAHO standards or practice updates were often inserted wherever they could be worked into the form.  ·The form did not provide a summary section for the nurse to consolidate his or her findings in preparation for the care plan, nor did it provide a summary section for other care members to review. Improper flow of assessment on the form.  ·The form did not provide for a summary conclusion from which to develop a thorough care plan.  ·The nurses didn’t necessarily like the form, but they had been using it for many years and no changes had been recommended by management. At this point one of the issues identified was that the nursing admission assessment form nee ded to be redesigned in order to be compliant and a proper flow patient care was documented for admission right up to referrals or discharges. Corrective Action Plan: After identifying the problem a goal was set up to develop a new form that needed to be user friendly for the nursing staff, yet functional. The corrective action should include:  ·Easy flow of information and reader friendly.  ·Typesetting should be professional.  ·It should include an overall summary section for team members to review.  ·Accreditation requirements must be interwoven in natural flow within the context of the assessment and become more meaningful components to the assessment: The design of the new form was based on the following research:  ·This format would include prompts, interwoven accreditation requirements, and a summary section.  ·Nursing topics were grouped together so that it flowed logically together and the nurse only needed to indicate negative exceptions to a healthy assessment. This would also minimize charting and clarify problematic areas in the patient’s assessment. If a section was normal, a quick check box indicating â€Å"no problems noted† was provided. The form also grouped together the need for financial assistance, need for case management referral, spiritual considerations, suspected abuse and neglect, and assistance at home, as well. Prompt boxes were also designed by these sections because it was the team’s belief that referrals to case management, the business office, and social services were also important in care planning. Such referrals or at least the documentation of the referral, had often times b een missing on our old assessment form. Referrals for regulatory requirements to PT (physical therapy), OT or SLP, Nutritional counseling and spiritual considerations were looked at to identify their placement. Once the form was ready, it was reviewed by Management which included the CEO, vice-president of nursing and legal council advisor. Implementation of corrective Action Plan:  ·A training session was conduced within the nursing units to review and asses the form.  ·The staff provided favorable feedback about the new assessment process, stating that they liked it and that it saved them time. The nurses in charge of audits stated that the form helps her when she’s looking for compliance With regulatory issues  ·The Nurse working in admitting patients stated that it greatly simplified this assessment. Conclusion: The development and identification of this assessment form was a process resulting from research based on guidelines as per JHACO. The record of care, treatment and services clearly states that it should comprise of all data and information gathered about a patient from the moment he or she enters the hospital to the moment of discharge or transfer.

This realization impacted his life entirely as he became fully aware of the fact that students were not benefiting from these exercises at all whatsoever. Once he understood that fear had now became an immense part of reading, he knew he had o take action. This occasion of sudden insight was pure motivation to get his message across using what he knows best: literature. The audience being directed at in numerous pieces of Halts writings are all identical. One example of the directed audience would be other mind-poisoning teachers that might come to their senses after reading Halts piece. Holt is positively convinced that the school system is corrupt due to the severe lack of freedom in the way teachers instruct their classes. After he grasped the idea about eating whatever book they choose in their free time, he attained a great deal of previously unknown knowledge about his students. The purpose of him writing these opinionated essays is to show society that reading can be pleasurable when it is not being constantly forced upon students. Seeing students improve their reading and learning abilities without persistent vocabulary and reading analysis tests is one of Halts main objectives as well. There is a distinct difference between wanting to read and be able to read and he believed he could make it so that they are both in onions. The author of this passage was John Holt, who an elementary school English educator for most of his life. His experience as a teacher have opened his eyes to what he truly believes in and will continue to be an advocate for. From the information given, it is quite evident that Holt is well educated. This observation could be inferred by his use of word choice and also his grammatically correct and elegant sentence structure. Another inference that can be made about Holt is that he is rather headstrong and stands up for what he believes in. For example, it took him woo years to realize and accept the fact that his sister was correct, and ever since he has never ceased to proclaim his beliefs. Throughout the piece, Holt changes in the aspect of his tone. Towards the beginning, Holt was a firm, strict teacher who, as he claimed, was not exactly lenient. Throughout the entire essay, Holt remains to keep his tone insightful and knowledgeable on everything. Eventually however, his tone begins to adjust and he becomes a radical thinker who wants to see a change, rather than the ordinary school teacher who prefers to stick to what has always been.

Health Care Interview Paper Essay

There are many different professions that one can choose when entering the healthcare field. Nursing is a very popular and needed profession that is vital to care for patients. For this paper I have chosen to interview my younger cousin who currently works for the VA Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada as a Registered Nurse in the Medical Surgical Unit. I will describe the targeted facility and unit she works for, the type of work done within her unit, any interesting, informative, or specific information related to the chosen unit which makes it unique, and a comprehensive description of my cousin, and her responsibilities. The facility that my cousin works at is The Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital. The purpose of this facility is to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise â€Å"To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan† by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans. The particular unit she works for is the Medical Surgical Unit. Some of the types of work done in this unit is to consult and coordinate health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients, write up care plans, prepare and administer (orally, subcutaneously, through IV) prescribed medication and records, report adverse reactions to medication or treatments in accordance with the policy in regards to administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse, educate patients on surgical procedures, record patients’ medical information and vital signs, monitors and adjust any specialized equipment used on patients, monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays. More tasks that are required of her in her unit are initiating corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology, she also provides bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients including pre- and post-surgery patients, initiates patient education plan as prescribed by physician which may include teaching patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury by explaining post-treatment home care needs such as: changes of dressings, insertion of catheters, and starting IVs. Other tasks include preparing equipment, aiding physician during examination and treatment of patient, and participation in discharge planning. All the tasks that she is required to accomplish on a daily basis require that she utilizes time management skills, attention to details, and accurately record all care information concisely and completely in an efficient manner. A very important trait that she must possess is to be adaptable, and have the ability to perform other du ties as assigned. Some interesting, informative, or specific information related to this department that makes it unique are that they cater to the veteran population and an age group that ranges from 50s-90s. She states that working for the VA Hospital she must understand what the veteran have gone through and understand where they are coming from. For instance, she needs to be sensitive to the facts that some of these veterans may suffer from post-traumatic syndrome disorder from war or other causes that may cause them extra stress or anxiety from being cared for in the Medical Surgical Unit. This requires that my cousin needs to not only have the professional skills that she learned in school, but also requires on sense of compassion that cannot being taught, but comes from within. A sense of empathy would also help in this field as it is allows for the nurse to not only care for the patient professionally, but also on a level that allows them to be cared for on a personal level which may help with the healing process as they may feel more important, and receiving better care rather than just being seen as another patient. When I was asked to find a healthcare individual to interview for my paper I chose my younger cousin because she is newer to the field, and would offer the most current description of her field without any bias that some nurses tend to have after working in the field for so long. She started her nursing career at the age of 23, and she does admit that she did have a hard time relating with her patients because of their ages and the types of experiences that some had to deal with. The transition she explains was hard because unlike her at age 23, these patients were sent off to war to protect their country. Many of them didn’t even have the privilege of having an education like she did. Another apparent difference was that her goals were to go to college and advance her career, and her patients’ goals were fighting for our country, and starting a family was insignificant. Now after being a nurse for a few years she was able to learn their point of views. For example, she explains that telling a veteran to be careful when getting up from the bed to go to the bathroom is embarrassing for them. These men have an idea in their head that they’re still that tough guy who can handle anything, and for someone young like her to tell them to be careful, makes them feel inferior and weak. This then becomes a really difficult communication barrier to overcome and it takes time, effort, and compassion to understand them. In my cousins own words, â€Å"It is still my job and my responsibility that these veterans are getting the appropriate care they deserve because that is who I’ve chosen to work for and what the department of veterans affairs stands for.† After my interview with my cousin, I have a new found respect for her, and Medical Surgical Nurses, and those who work with her to care for our Veterans. Not only does she have to handle the difficult, and stressful tasks that she is dealt with everyday, but she also must be able to handle the types of patients that she cares for. These patients have had to go through difficult situations that civilians would never have to endure. A civilian would never have to deal with coming back from a war, and possibly have seen many people die, or have that fear that they may die far from home. Having these types of stress that veterans deal with may make their mentality different from regular patients, and in turn cause difficulty for nurses that need to care for them. Therefore, a patient that is cared for with the compassion that my cousin offers as a nurse is very fortunate, and I know that she must feel as though she is making a difference in the lives of the patients she cares for. As I mentioned in the beginning that there are many fields to choose from in healthcare, but a nurse must be able to offer care both professionally and selflessly on levels that are beyond just caring for patient.

In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller uses common objects as symbols between the main characters in his play. Women's stockings and their holes symbolize the failing relationship between Willy and his wife. Seeds in a garden symbolize Willy's declining sense of self-worth and his need to leave something significant behind after his death. The tennis racket Willy observes when he chats with Bernard in Charley's office is a symbol of Bernard's success and Biff's failure. Finally, the fountain pen is a symbol of the burden Willy's son Biff carries as he tries to live up to his father's image even though he never wants to inhabit that role. Linda is always sewing her old stockings to fix their holes. The holes resemble the things in her life that are broken. Willy gets frustrated with Linda when she tries to fix the old stockings; he feels she should throw them out. He says: "Will you stop mending stockings? At least while I am in the house. It gets me nervous. I can't tell you. Please" (75). Willy's reaction to the sewing suggests the guilt he feels for having an affair - he gave a pair of Linda's stockings to his mistress. To Biff, who witnessed that transaction, stockings represent betrayal and deep hurt. "You-you gave her mama's stockings" (121). Biff becomes aware that his father is messing around with another women and becomes very emotional. It almost seems that the stockings are the reason for Biff's anger. It also important note the new stockings are important for Willy's pride in being financially successful and thus able to provide for his family. The seeds that Willy constantly talks about throughout the entire play are very significant to him. Seeds represent for Willy the opportunity to prove the worth of his labor, both as a salesman and a father. Willy is afraid when he dies he will have nothing to leave his family. Willy thinks that when he dies that there will be no one to put food on the table, so the vegetables are his attempt of doing so. Throughout the play you can notice Willy is always talking about the seeds and seems as if he is in a rush to plant the seeds, I think that is because every time he talks about seeds he is closer to the time he plans to commit his suicide. The seeds also symbolize Willy's sense of failure with Biff. Willy planned on raising Biff to be a smart salesman, but Biff got into trouble for stealing and Willy blames himself for raising his son, in what he thinks is the wrong way. The fountain pen symbolizes dishonesty and greed in the business world. After Biff steals the pen and he is on the stairs, he thinks to himself that he doesn't want to be in the same position as his dad and be unhappy and miserable in his life. Biff comes to understand that the American dream only creates emptiness and frustration. The fountain pen also stands for a changing point for Biff and he returns the pen to the office and leaves. You can see this because at the end of the play Biff wants to reconcile with his dad and not argue like they always do. Especially since Biff already knows about his father's affair with the mistress, he does a good job of changing his attitude and keeping cool. "Every time I've left it's been a fight that sent me out of here" (128). This just simply shows that Biff and Willy constantly get into fights and Biff wants to actually change that. "The Jungle is dark but full of diamonds" (85). The diamonds are the second biggest symbol in this play. Ben rubs the diamonds in Willy's face throughout the play. Willy is frustrated because he doesn't have any tangible evidence to show for his achievements in sales, while Ben can physically show his diamonds off.

The current Kenyan education system consists of Early Childhood Education, primary and secondary education. Early Childhood Education takes one year. At the end of the primary education, pupils sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) prepared by the Kenya National Examination Council. Performance in the KCPE determines who is admitted to secondary schools. At the end of secondary education, students sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. Primary school education in Kenya is a basic and is considered the root of all formal and informal learning in Kenya. Free and compulsory primary education for Kenyan children was one of the key pre-election promises that led the NARC government led by President Mwai Kibaki, to ascend to power in December 2002. Since then, an estimated 1. 5 million children, who were previously out-of school, have turned up to attend classes (Paul Kenya, 2008). The free Primary Education policy was first implemented in January 2003. The FPE policy focuses on attaining Education For all and in particular, Universal Primary Education. Key concerns are access, retention, equity, quality and relevance and internal and external efficiencies within the education system (Ministry Of Education Science and Technology, 2005a, pp3). Through the FPE policy, the NARC government scrutinized the current 8-4-4 systems, which had previously been coupled with retention and reduced enrolment before it came to power. The policy’s focus is on â€Å"quality education and training as a human right in accordance to Kenya law and international conventions† (Ministry Of Education Science and Technology, 2005 pp3). Increase in number of children enrolled in primary schools. Primary education has witnessed phenomenal growth since the policy was established. CHALLENGES FACED BY THE POLICY. 1. Delays in Funds Disbursement Delays in distributing funds to support free primary school education is one of the challenges facing the policy implementation. This has frustrated many teachers, put pressure and on parents financial burdens. Teachers thus lack motivation to teach the increasing number of pupils as a result of the introduction of the policy. 2. Teacher Shortages A UNESCO survey on the evaluation of the Free Primary policy (UNESCO, 2005) indicates that the teacher: pupil ratio, in a significant number of schools was 1:70 which was far beyond the recommended maximum rate of 1:40. Such a high ratio has got challenges. For example, teachers find it impossible to pay attention to all learners, especially the slow ones. Also teachers were not able to give adequate assignments to the pupils, as they could not cope with the marking and teaching workload (UNESCO, 2005). 3. Teacher-Learning Facilities There is a challenge in the limited teacher-learning facilities, which forces pupils to share. Sharing of facilities such as textbooks, exercise books, pens e. t. c has affected pupil’s accessibility to the books while at home and many have to do their homework early in the morning the next day when in school. There is also the issue of inadequate physical facilities where most schools did not have adequate classroom to accommodate the large number of pupils enrolled under the FPE programmes. 4. Managerial Skills Most school managers (the head teachers) are not well equipped in managerial skills. This is to say that their managerial skills are poor and these results to poor results by the schools they head as well as mismanagement of available funds. 5. Mobility from Public to Private and within Public Schools This may not be a major challenge but it still is a challenge. Teachers complain that pupils’ frequent transfers from one school to another at any point of the term and in any class affect content delivery. This may be as a result of a preference for free and cheaper education, school availability and its proximity as well as the highest grade offered in a school. A lower fee is also a factor, and cheaper or free schools seemed to be an important motivation for school transfer. 6. Embezzlement of Funds and Corruption Embezzlement of funds is a core challenge. Some government officials are corrupt and hence there is mismanagement or misallocation of funds that are allocated to them, (UNESCO, 2005). For instance, the sponsor’s funds; this makes some children who are poor miss the opportune moments of schooling. I addition to that, senior officials in the Ministry of Education, in Kenya have been accused of protecting corrupt headmasters suspected of embezzling funds because they are also indirectly benefiting from incentives that are being paid by parents, disgruntled senior education officials have revealed, (UNESCO, 2005). RECCOMENDATIONS 1. Timely release of funds. Funds should be released as soon as they are available. This will ensure the teachers and students remain motivated to learn. 2. Increase numbers of teachers employed and increase their wages. Increasing the number of teachers permanently employed in public primary schools will help to take care of the teacher-student ratio. Increasing their wages will also ensure that the teachers are motivated to do their work well. 3. Investing in Teacher-Learning Facilities. The government should invest in building more classrooms to reduce the current congestion in the classrooms. The government should also work hand in hand with sponsors and international investors to ensure the pupils have enough books, pens and other facilities needed by both teachers and pupils. 4. Training of managers. Heads of schools should be trained on how to manage the funds given to them as well as efficiently running the schools. 5. Monitor ministry officials and those handling the funds. An organization or body that can monitor the ministry officials and those handling the funds such as the anti-corruption commission of Kenya to ensure that those handing the funds are not corrupt and those caught in corrupt practices face the law. Remind yourself of scene 5, lines 167 – 280 (pages 31 – 37 in the New Mermaids Edition) from â€Å"Now would I have a book†¦Ã¢â‚¬  to the entrance of The Seven Deadly Sins. (In some other editions, this section begins near the end of Act 2 Scene 5 and includes the opening of Act 2 Scene 1.) What is the importance of this section in the context of the whole play? In your answer you should consider: -The dramatic effects created by the Good and Evil Angels -The language used by Faustus and Mephastophilis. This section of the play has both an important structural and contextual role in Dr. Faustus. Leading the audience through his doubt and limitations, Faustus begins to realize that his potential for knowledge and power is not half as grand as he expected. This leads him into strong bouts of inner struggle, as shown by the appearance of the good and evil angels on stage. The forces of good and evil start to tear away at Faustus, and he begins the decline into his inventible tragic downfall at the end of the play. At the start of section, we see Faustus is beginning to use his powers to attain rare and elusive knowledge about our universe, forming elaborate demands, such as; â€Å"Now would I have a book where I might see all characters and planets of the heavens, that I might know their motions and dispositions†. Of course, the knowledge is granted, but appears to be enclosed in one single-volume book. Faustus sees this as a boundary – another restriction, on the pledge that was supposed to bring him ultimate rewards. He states; â€Å"O thou art deceived!†, realising the dissatisfaction, and what he has sacrificed. It could be said that Marlowe uses this anticlimax to warn the audience not to follow Faustus’ ways, emphasizing the fact that it can only bring superficial pleasures and shallow reward. The section is also characterized by the two appearances of the good and evil angels, which I feel play a significant role in the morality issues the dealt with in the play. Aside from signifying the persuasion into evil, the appearance of the angels also represents Faustus’ inner conflict, by exposing his gradual realisation that his actions have left him disappointed, and the fact that he cannot escape the religion within him. These scenes are vital to the play, and are used by Marlowe to present Faustus’ thoughts on stage. If seen in the context of a morality play, it could be ... ...stus is blind to the truth of repentance. And I feel at this moment, the audience truly realize that he can never escape this tragic spiral into damnation. Overall, we have seen how Marlowe uses this section of Dr.Faustus to present the tragic traits in Faustus’ character, and most importantly to highlight his flaws, and how they show the gradual failure of his plans. It deals with important contextual issues, such as the limitations and implications of over ambition shown in Mephastophilis blunt offerings – which Marlowe demonstrate the consequences of over-reaching yourself. It also presents us with the Morality play idea, by using the Good and Evil angels to present Faustus’ inner struggle of good versus evil, which he cannot overcome. Finally, Marlowe has also used the section to convey the traits of the Elizabethan tragic hero – in Faustus’ constant search for achievement, inability to recognise implications and failed plans. Ultimately, I feel the section is significant as it powerfully highlights these characteristics to portray the dangers of Faustus’ exploits, while evoking feelings of fear and tension with the audience towards the tragic climax at the end of the play.

Book Review of 1491 by Charles C. Mann Essay

With 1491:New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus Charles C. Mann has written an extremely interesting and controversial book. Beginning in 1983 Mann began to become aware that research had indicated the commonly held view of the settling of the Americas was wrong. The commonly held and taught belief that the Americas were inhabited by people who crossed the Bering Sea from Europe about 13,000 years ago was wrong. Allegedly these people lived in small, isolated groups that had little impact on the environment. Instead Mann, with considerable documentation and research by scientists, archeologists and geographers supporting this view, argues that the Americas were inhabited thousands of years earlier, existed in far larger numbers, and had been â€Å"successful at imposing their will on the landscape that in 1492 Columbus set foot in a hemisphere thoroughly marked by humankind† (Mann, 1491, 4). Spurred by what he had seen and read and by the fact that his son was being taught the same thing Mann had been taught in high school thirty years earlier, he wrote a book that â€Å"explores what I [he] believes to be the three main foci of the new findings: Indian demography . . . Indian origins . . . and Indian ecology† (Mann, 1491, x-xi). Mann begins his book by discussing the notion of the â€Å"Noble Savage,† a concept that began in the early sixteenth century. This position is the notion that the indigenous people of the Americas lived an idyllic life prior to the arrival of Columbus or were savage barbarians who did nothing constructive. Mann cites Bartolomà © de Las Casas a conquistador who had visited the Americas who believed â€Å"Indians were natural creatures who dwelt, gentle as cows . . . waiting for millennia—for Christian instruction† (Mann, 1491, 12-14). In essence this view is that of a colonist who came to the Americas looking for signs of the Old World. Since the Native Americans apparently did not have as dramatic an impact on the environment subsequent generations viewed the pre-Colombian people as either innocents or as barbarians. Both accounts showed the prejudice that these people lacked â€Å"agency—they were not actors in their own right, but passive recipients of whatever windfalls or disasters happenstance put in their way† (Mann, 1491, 12). It would be interesting to examine the European migration into the Americas from the point of view of the indigenous people. Mann cites studies that have called into question the notion that Native Americans first arrived in the Americas 13,000 years ago over a land bridge in the Bering Straits and slowly migrated drifted south and east until they populated the Americas. In 1987 people who had supported this view publicly admitted that there is clear evidence of human habitation in Chile more than 12,000 years ago. Consequently it is unlikely that natives would have migrated more than 7,000 miles in less than a millennium leaving people in their wake to form new groups of people who would create their own culture. In addition there is evidence suggesting habitation in Chile more than 20,000 years ago. Further exploration has revealed numerous indications of large civilizations throughout Mesoamerica and South America that had existed and ended well before the sixteen century. According to Mann the current view among scholars is that the Western Hemisphere was â€Å"a thriving, stunningly diverse place, a tumult of languages, trade, and culture, a region where tens of millions of people loved and hated and worshipped as people do everywhere† (Mann, 1491, 26-27). According to a 1999 United Nations estimate, the population of the earth in the beginning of the sixteenth century was about 500 million. Estimates by Dobyns and others indicate that by 1630, between 80 and 100 million Native Americans had been killed by a variety of epidemics including small pox, typhus, and influenza. These numbers suggest that nearly one fifth of the world’s population was killed by disease in the one hundred and fifty years after the arrival of Columbus (Mann, 1491, 94-96). According to Mann in 1491 the Inka (or Inca as it is more commonly spelled) was the largest empire on the planet. It was bigger than China, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and bigger by far than any European state. It extended for more than thirty-two degrees of latitude (the United States has a latitude length of approximately twenty-five degrees of latitude though of course a much wider degree of longitude). The Inka had a goal that was remarkably similar to the Europeans; they want to â€Å"knit the different groups of South America . . . into a single bureaucratic framework under the direct rule of the emperor†(Mann, 1491, 66). They wanted to meld together the people’s religion, economics, and arts. At time they were brutal. They would remove people from their homelands by means of a road system of approximately 25,000 miles, the longest in the world and locate them to live with and work with other people who had also been displaced. They developed a system of accounting that used ropes with knots in a way remarkably similar to the binary mathematics use in today’s computers. Such an extensive and sophisticated government hardly supports the theory of the â€Å"Nobel Savage† living an idyllic life, doing nothing that affected their environment (Mann, 1491, 64-82). Interestingly, among those people who are reluctant to accept such an early arrival of Native Americans are Indian activists who do not wish to push the date of arrival of Native Americans further into the past. Particularly in light of the evidence that supports the notion that large civilizations such as the Incas and Aztecs were not the original inhabitants but had supplanted people that had arrived much earlier. If this were the case, the claim that their land was stolen by European immigrants is considerably weakened since the indigenous people at the time of Columbus were not the first to â€Å"own† the land, just the people who had most recently stolen the lands from the previous populations in the Americas. According to his website Mann is a journalist and writer. He is a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, Science, and Wired. He was written for a wide variety of magazines including: The New York Times Magazine, Forbes ASAP, Smithsonian, and The Washington Post. He has co-authored four other books. Mann’s writing tends to focus on â€Å"the intersection of science, technology, and commerce.† He is a three time National Magazine Award finalist and has received numerous awards from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Physics, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Margaret Sanger Foundation. Mann’s credentials indicate that he is a well qualified writer and does careful research. Mann’s writing has a liberal edge to it that often seeks to correct common perceptions about the topics he chooses to write about: in this case the life of Native Americans before the arrival of Columbus. 1491 is a well-written, well-organized book. Mann provides a survey of research since the early 1950s when the â€Å"Noble Savage† theory of Native Americans was first popularized. Although Mann clearly has a position he wants to convey, he provides a fair presentation of other positions and explains why he believes the â€Å"Noble Savage† theory does not account for many discoveries and recent research. He writes in a very readable style without the many subordinate clauses and circumlocutions professional scholars are often given to. A nice feature of the book is the inclusion of maps and pictures located throughout the book instead of placing the maps on the flyleaf and having the pictures grouped together in the middle. Consequently, the impact of the pictures and maps is greater because they are pertinent to the nearby text. Mann provides ample endnotes both citation and explanatory notes that add to the authenticity of the text. The bibliography is comprehensive and lists use of a variety of scholarly journals from such disciplines as anthropology, geography, history and archeology among others. Mann’s writing is convincing. He provides considerable recently discovered information that contradicts the Noble Savage theory. It is apparent that people have lived throughout the Americas for a much longer time than the 13,000 years conventionally taught. Although future research and advanced technology will likely reveal new details and correct other errors, it is clear to that the indigenous people existed in much more sophisticated societies and in much larger numbers that has been believed. Reciprocal and Reflexive Sentences in Spanish Understanding or translating reflexive or reciprocal sentences in Spanish where there are two or more subjects can be confusing because they can be ambiguous without qualifiers. Learn how these types of sentences are constructed and how to eliminate ambiguity in Spanish using two common phrases. Why There Can Be Ambiguity in Spanish Sentences First, let us define and expand upon what a  reflexive sentence is. The pronoun se is commonly used (although it has many other uses as well) to indicate that a person is performing some type of action on or toward that person. For example, se ve can mean he sees himself and se hablaba can mean she was talking to herself. The confusion with reflexive sentences can come when the subject of such sentences is plural. See, for example, how the following Spanish sentences are ambiguous. Either of the translations given after the Spanish sentence is valid: Se ayudaron. (They helped themselves. They helped each other.)Se golpean. (They are hitting themselves. They are hitting each other.)Pablo y Molly se aman. (Pablo and Molly love themselves. Pablo and Molly love each other.) The same ambiguity can exist in the first and second persons as well: Nos daà ±amos. (We hurt ourselves. We hurt each other.)Nos amamos. (We love ourselves. We love each other.) ¿Os odiis? (Do you hate yourselves? Do you hate each other?) The problem occurs because in Spanish the plural reciprocal pronouns are the same as the reflexive pronouns; they are nos in the first person, os in the second person, and se in the third person. (Note that in Latin America os is seldom used, as se is typically used in both the second- and third-person plurals.) This is in contrast with English where the reflexive pronouns in the plural are ourselves, yourselves, and themselves- but the reciprocal pronouns are each other and one another. How To Clarify When Context Doesn’t Help Most of the time, the context of the sentence will make clear what meaning is intended. If the context does not help, there are two very common phrases that can be used to eliminate the ambiguity. First, the idiom a sà ­ mismos is commonly used to indicate that a reflexive meaning is intended- in other words, that the subjects are acting on themselves rather than each other. For example: Se aman a sà ­ mismos. (They love themselves.)No pueden verse a sà ­ mismos. (They cant see themselves.)Es importante que nos escuchemos a sà ­ mismos. (It is important that we listen to ourselves.) If all the persons involved are female, or if the names of all subjects are grammatically feminine, the feminine form a sà ­ mismas should be used: Cà ³mo se perciben a sà ­ mismas las mujeres con la infertilidad? (How do women with infertility perceive themselves?)Cuà ­dense a sà ­ mismas. (Take care of yourselves.)Estas piernas robà ³ticas son capaces de enseà ±arse a sà ­ mismas a andar. (These robotic legs are capable of teaching themselves to walk.) Second, the phrase el uno al otro, which can be literally translated as one to the other, is the rough equivalent of each other: No debemos hacernos eso el uno al otro. (We shouldnt do that to each other._Se golpean el uno al otro. (They are hitting each other.)El ordenador y el monitor se necesitan el uno al otro. )The computer and the monitor need each other.) ¿Os odiis el uno al otro? (Do you two hate each other?) El uno al otro can also be used in feminine and/or plural variations: Pablo y Molly se aman el uno a la otra. (Pablo and Molly love each other.)Se abrazaban la una a la otra.
