Bass Reeves

Black Reeves is best known as the first African-American Deputy Marshall West of the Mississippi River. He is considered as one of the greatest frontier heroes of America. Using his talent with firearms to â€Å"clean op† the chaotic Indian Territory, he was able to turn in numerous criminals into custody. Where he was actually born is shrouded in mystery as several sources say that he is either born in Texas or Arkansas. At any rate, he eventually moved to Texas along with his master, George Reeves, a politician and farmer, with whom Bass Reeves last name, was taken (Weiser, 2009).Bass Reeves, despite his big frame, was a good man, polite in his ways, and had a good sense of humor. These characteristics allowed him to be favored by his master—he became the â€Å"buddy† and personal servant of George Reeves. During the Civil war, George Reeves joined the Confederate army and tagged along with him Bass Reeves (Weiser, 2009). A sort of Civil War within Bass and Geor ge’s relationship also happened during the war. Bass Reeves, for one reason or another left his master and sought refuge in Indian land.Rumors say that a fight broke out between George and Bass during a card game, another rumor says that the promise of being free after the war coaxed Bass Reeves into parting ways with his master. He spent a good deal of time with Seminole and Creek Indians, all the while honing his skills in shooting. He became so skilled in shooting that he was disqualified in most turkey shooting competitions (Weiser, 2009). The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 freed all the African-American slaves. Bass Reeves purchased land in Arkansas where he put up a farm. After a year of being a successful farmer, he was married to Nellie Jennie. Bass Reeves and Nellie Jennie raised a family of five girls and five boys while enjoying life on the farm (Weiser, 2009). The chaotic Indian Territory would be the cause for Bass Reeve’s career change. The Indian Terri tory during Reeve’s time became the hideout of all sorts of outlaws. This prompted the government to commission Isaac Parker as a judge in the District Court at Fort Smith, Arkansas, the closest fort near the Indian Territory. In turn, Parker commissioned James Fagan, a US Marshall, to employ 200 deputies. Bass Reeves’ familiarity with the Indian Territory and local languages (because of his exile there) came into Fagan’s attention, resulting in the recruitment of Reeves. The deputies were hired for one purpose alone, and that is to eradicate the outlaws of the area at any cost (Weiser, 2009). Reeves soon started his duty as a US Deputy and worked alongside fellow frontier legends like Bud Ledbetter, Bill Tilghman, and Heck Thomas. The US Deputies covered about 75,000 square miles of land encompassing Oklahoma, which is within the jurisdiction of Fort Smith (Weiser, 2009). The law states that a warrant of arrest is needed in order for the arrest to be legal. An un educated person would have trouble with this because warrants are written documents, and deputies often have to carry multiple warrants with them. However, illiteracy did not stop Reeves from carrying out his duty He memorized each warrant by having it read aloud to him before they ride out.He knew which warrant to show for each criminal (Weiser, 2009). As if his 6 foot, two-inch frame was not tall enough to intimidate criminals, Reeves, fully dressed with shined boots and all, rode a big stallion to be a dominant figure. Despite his fondness of looking at his best all the time, when the task required a little bit of creativity, he used a variety of guises to apprehend criminals as efficiently as possible. He always had with him two revolvers which he used, and he was adept at using them in both hands (Weiser, 2009).Reeves pursuit of criminals would often mean that he would be out of the fort for months at a time and come back only to turn in his captured criminals and spend a short time with his family (Weiser, 2009). One capture that has immortalized Reeves is his capture of two outlaw brothers in the Red River Valley. His posse camped out a distance away from the house where the outlaws were thought to be hiding. Reeves disguised himself as a man in rags and knocked on the door of the outlaws. The outlaws’ mother opened up and allowed him to stay, all the while fooling her that he wants to join forces with her sons. The outlaws came home, and Reeves managed to convince the family to join forces. While the outlaws were on their sleep, Reeves handcuffed them without them even noticing. First thing in the morning, Reeves woke the outlaws and brought them to the camp where the rest of his posse was. The outlaws’ capture brought in an additional $5,000 dollars to Reeves’ name (Weiser, 2009). Another famous adventure that Reeves involved himself into is the encounter with Bob Dozier. Dozier was an infamous criminal and has managed to elude Ree ves for the longest time.Refusing arrest, Dozier was shot dead by Reeves (Weiser, 2009). The hardest arrest that Reeves had to do was the arrest of his own son. His son was charged by killing his own wife. Reeves volunteered to take his own son into custody. After half a month of pursuit, he turned in his son and was tried and sent to prison but was released earlier than decreed because of petition and a clean record while in prison (Weiser, 2009). After law enforcement was established in the area, deputies were no longer needed. He served as a patrolman in Oklahoma for two years. While he was in the office, crime was virtually zero.Only sickness prevented Reeves from continuing his service, as he was diagnosed with Bright’s disease. He died on the 12th of January 1910 (Weiser, 2009). Over 3,000 outlaws were apprehended by Reeves in a span of 35 years. That means more than 7 outlaws turned in every month if we do the math. With just 14 casualties in all, Bass Reeves is probab ly the most efficient official in American history (Weiser, 2009). Reference Weiser, K. (2009). Black Reeves – Black Hero Marshall. The boy and the stripped pj

An important part of life is to have a sense of identity, culture and to belong. Sometimes we have to sacrifice some of our Identity to fit in, but we can learn new things and grow our Identity. A sense of belonging means you feel you are In the right place, your comfortable being yourself. While many people belong, there are also many people who don't belong, either by having a lack of friends, not fitting in or finding their surrounding new or unsure. In 2008 mark Hermes produced the movie the Boy In the Stripped Pajamas that has both aspect of belonging. In the Immigrant Chronicles by Peter Crooknecks, he writes is poems about his life experiences and weather or not if he belonged. 2 poems of his, from the immigrant chronicles that show a lack of belonging are â€Å"In the Folk Museum† and â€Å"The Migrant Hostel†. The Boy In the Stripped Pajamas Is a movie about a 8 year old boy called Bruno, him and his family are made to move to a place called out with (Auschwitz) , they move houses as his father is a highly ranked solider. Their new house is in sight of a connection camp, because of this Bruno is not allowed to do his most favorite thing explore, and must stay inside of the yard. The movie is set in World War 2, Germany After they move the first scene, where Bruno feels a sense of belonging Is when he runs out of the yard into the forest, the camera follows him by a tracking shot, this highlights the joy he gets from exploring. The overgrown surrounding highlights his freedom, after having nothing to do and no one to talk to; when he is running you can see how he feels a sense of belonging and identity. The closer Bruno gets to the fence the brighter the colors get; this reinforced the tone of Bruno and his happiness. Hen Bruno first comes across the fence and sees Samuel, he doesn't understand hat the connection camp is, he sees Samuel as a new friend that will be able to play with him. When Bruno and Samuel first meet the shot goes between the two of them, when the shot is on Bruno the background is bright yellow flowers, Bruno is in nice clean clothes, when the shots goes to Samuel the background it is dull grey colors and he Is wearing old dirty stripped pajamas, the dull colors shows us, that Samuel doesn't fit In to his surrounding, he doesn't belong In a contention camp at 8 years old.The scene gives us the visual clues that enabled us to compare their lives. We're not meant to be friends you and me, we're meant to be enemies did you know,† said by Bruno to Samuel, this shows the culture barrier between them. In one of the last scene with Bruno and Samuel Is when Bruno crosses the fence to help as he realizes what the camp is the, weather starts to storm and turn dull grey tones, which creates tension. The last view of Bruno and Samuel is when they get taken to the gas chamber with other prisoners. The view is them clutching hands, it shows even in death, they friendship is united, that in the end they belon ged to each other s friends. In the folk museum is about the poet being in a museum, he can't connected to the museum, because he feels like he is in a different time zone, that his surrounding aren't from where he is used, he doesn't belong in that time zone. The poem suggests the importance of belonging to a place and how it makes you feel. In stanza 1 the words â€Å"darkness† and â€Å"betray' creates a tone of isolated and alienation, it creates the atmosphere of lonely, sadness and sinister. In the movie, Bruno feels alienated, when he moved he has no one his age as him and wasn't allowed to explore, he feels like he can't belong to his new surrounding, that there is nothing their for him. The extending metaphor of the words, autumn, yellow and brown reinforced a mood of dull colors that creates a feeling of being alone and unpleasant that he isn't happy where he is. In the finial stanza line 3, â€Å"l leave without, wanting a finial look. † This is Lorraine; it creates the effect of a fast escape. When Bruno starts running he doesn't look back.It shows when you can to start to feel like you are belonging again, you don't need to look back you know what's right and you Just go for it. The Migrant Hostel is about the experiences of the author and others at a migrant hostels. Crooknecks creates the feeling of disappointment through the many reference of them having no control over their lives. The poem to me talks about the hardship and barriers of creating a new life. In stanza 1 line 1,2 â€Å"no one kept count, of all the coming and going†, this creates the feeling like they weren't important. The poem can relate the Samuel and the other member of the connection camp. The people from the connection camp are not treated right. â€Å"Those people, well their not really people at all, Bruno†, Bruno father ells Bruno, this shows how they can't belong as they aren't even considered to be people at all. In stanza 3 line 2†³we lived like birds of passage† this is a simile, the we in the sentence can refer to everyone in the camp that even know they don't belong they are starting a new Journey and they all want to fly out.It also refers to the way migrants are still in transit as everything is changing and they are being constantly moved around. Which can make them have a lack of security and belonging to the place The line â€Å"a barrier at the main gate, sealed off the highway' is making the separation f them and Australia, it makes them feel powerless, the highway symbioses the fence is a recurring motif in the movie, many scenes including where they meet, is the fence. The fence becomes a barrier between their friendships, but it is what ties they together. The gate in the poem can give them hope; it could represent the new start, that once they're through the gate their started. The Boy in the Stripped pajamas, In the Folk Museum and The Migrant hostel shows the importance of belonging to peopl e and place and how it can relate to making people unhappy.

Four Questions 2 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Four Questions 2 - Assignment Example Essentially, it is these social coalitions that modify and determine the state ‘preferences’ or rather foreign policy in global politics at any moment in time. Political institutions form the basic channels through which these social interests of both individuals and civil society groups find their way into the political realm. The second basic assumption of liberalism is that the interdependence among of state preferences influence state behavior. Unlike realists who insists on constancy of preferences, liberalists hold that the state preferences are dynamic in nature and they play a critical role in influencing the world politics. The variations in state policy and behavior is a function of exact distribution of preferences and nature of the ‘stakes’ in consideration. States, as argued out by liberals, align their behavior to the exact nature of these preferences (compatible or conflictual) and their scope. A â€Å"social purpose† is a pre-requisite for any state to pay any attention to international matters, let alone trigger conflict, initiate cooperation, or consider any other crucial foreign policy undertaking. In the absence of this interdependence among the objectives of different states, a rational state will not engage in any international relations, hence exist as an isolated and autarkic entity. Basically, liberalists argue that conflictual goals promote political disputes whereas convergence of underlying preference form a platform for peaceful cooperation. Burchill (2009) describes liberalism as an optimistic approach to international relations that advocates for freedom, human rights, free market capitalism, and constitutionalism. Liberalists hold the fundamental belief that peace and freedom are the basic questions of domestic and international order. The recent trends in world politics has seen increased calls for nations to cooperate with international bodies for the mutual interest of global peace. In another example, United States has been undertaking solitary interventional actions in world affairs. However, with the advent of modern liberalism, calls to cooperate with multinational bodies such as NATO in conducting interventional plans has been on the increased. This is based evidenced in the recent French Military intervention in Mali and the NATO intervention in Libya. Liberalists advocate for the adherence to human rights and free market capitalism. China and U.S. offer examples of how liberalists’ perspectives of free trade is gradually permeating the international markets. China has recently expanded its market to the developing world especially in Africa. Most of its products are sold in these nations in exchange of other natural resources and agricultural produce. United States has equally expanded its trade across the globe. Nonetheless, China has come under sharp criticism from other players in the global economy for their engagements in activities that are thought to hinder free trade. WTO other nations continuously urge China to embrace the spirit of free and fair cooperation in trade. SECTION 2 Question A:. Identify and discuss at least three social, economic, and/or environmental activities of the UN and other intergovernmental organizations. Do you agree that each of these activities should fall under the realm of an organization such as the UN? Why or why not? Through international bodies such as International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, the United Nations plays a critical role in ensuring

Porter's Five Forces of Burberry Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Porter's Five Forces of Burberry - Assignment Example The most common barrier that may be faced by new entrants include; cost of entering this industry is very high given the fact that there has been new technological advancement. Secondly, Burberry tends to have cost advantage and well established channels for distributing its products. The cost advantage may acts as a major entry barrier to the new firms. Further, Burberry has well differentiated products such as; Trench coats that its competitors may not be able to emulate. However, fashion industry tends to be very dynamic. This means that entry barriers are low and therefore, Burberry should work to increase internal and external strength to compete with new entrants more efficiently and effectively (Totallyan, 2011). Burberry Company need to have numerous suppliers than it has currently. There is a need for the company to have numerous suppliers so that incase one supplier fail to deliver raw materials for manufacturing fashion products another supplier may be contacted. This may help to reduce loses emanating from prompt delivery of raw materials. In addition, having numerous suppliers may ensure that there is seamless flow of products into the fashion market (Merrill, 2008). In this case buyer’s power is relatively high in the fashion industry under which Burberry is operating. This is because the numbers of large players are increasing making it possible for buyers to switch into brands produced by other companies. However, most of the new entrants do not have differentiated products as compared to Burberry Company. This provides Burberry a competitive advantage over its competitors because of customers brand loyalty. In addition, the buyers are well informed about the products produced by Burberry. This tends to influence their power. Moreover, economic forces such as inflation may affect buyer’s power whereby, during inflation buyers power tend to be low as they become more sensitive to higher price changes (Kotler, Keller, and Lu

Al Qaeda and the US Strategy for Combating Terrorism Assignment

Al Qaeda and the US Strategy for Combating Terrorism - Assignment Example Gallaher’s take on this issue of patriot movement is that of several stages, but he clarifies that it has no clear indication on the point in time when it occurred first. There are two major themes that stand out in this issue despite there being a misunderstanding between scholars and political analysts. The themes are; firstly, the origin of the movement is related directly to the current destruction of the welfare of the modern state particularly in the rural areas of America. The other is the political economy’s formation of the groups that mobilize themselves for movements. A series of movements have happened like in the 1790s, there were whiskey rebels, like in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio. Patriot movement is said to have first emerged in the legacy of Roosevelt’s deal that occurred between the state and producers and the subsequent fallout. Informants have on several occasions cited the New Deal by Roosevelt as the beginning of the pro blems that currently exist in America. One of the cases that may have come from this deal is the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) Movements that were antigovernment continued to escalate. The magnitude of the patriot movement organizations increased a big deal and in accordance to Wright, the number of groups for the patriot movement rose from 224 in the year 1995 to a high number of 858 in 1996. However, after the year 1996, there was a steady decline from this number of 858 to as low as 194 groups in the early 2000s. Arresting of group leaders is highly seen to be the cause of the decline. (Wright, 2007 p202)   There are extremist pools that are still in existence which include remaining parts of racial supremacist communities, patriot movements, and other newer movements. They have proliferated antigovernment movements as well as theories of racial conspiracy. There are publications that exist like, â€Å"The Turner Diaries and the Myth of the Six Million† that still co ntinue to bring about anti-semantic extremism and racial extremism as well. (Buxton and Provenzo, 2010 p316) In the USA, there exists hate-mongering kind of groups of reform and extreme right seeking. There are quite a good number of Dissident Right Social types of movements such as patriot movements and religious groups like the Christian movement. The Extreme Right Dissident Right movements have been considered the same by scholars. Racism movements are grouped under Extreme Right movements. Patriotic movements and armed citizen  militias are included under the same kind of movements; Dissident Right movements for social purposes and thus patriotic movements could breed terrorism. (Berlet, 2011) In the USA the Nazi group is not a new thing since they were there in the 1920s. They were part of the NSGWP (National Socialist German Workers Party) of the US. It also merged with another Tentomia society so as to come up with German-American Bund. They (these groups) got to higher lev els of popularity in the 1930s which was rather considered controversial. They faded during the times of the Second World War. They were abandoned due to the forced dismantling of the same. As the 21st century set in, Neo-Nazi groups have cropped up together with white separatist, white supremacist, anti-semantic as well as fascist groups. These are said to be allies and share a lot in common to the Nazism ideologies.

Business report about Mountain West Health Plans Inc Essay

Business report about Mountain West Health Plans Inc - Essay Example This had become a problem to the management because it was labor intensive and consumed two thirds of the annual budget. Therefore, the company’s management had been yearning for Evelyn Gustafson’s replacement so that they could curb the increasing labor costs. Evelyn Gustafson had a long history with the company because she had worked there for a long time. She started her career as a customer service staff until she was promoted to being the director of customer service. Her leadership style was centered on putting oneself in the position of the subordinates. She used this style due to her experience in working in that department, and she understood what the employees went through. In her leadership style, she focused on involving the employees in the tasks by making them understand the company products and policies. She also focused on the quality of service that the subordinates offered to customers. In addition, Evelyn emphasized on employee training on the product s, problem solving and customer service techniques, which helped to ensure customer satisfaction. Her relationship oriented leadership style also involved ensuring the comfort of employees when performing their tasks by allowing them flexible schedules and breaks. However, her leadership style was not was not appealing to the top management, and they endeavored to change it after her retirement by appointing Erick Rasmussen to the post of director of customer service. Erik Rasmussen is a fresh college graduate in business administration, and therefore, he has no experience in the post. He sought to embrace a leadership style that ensured that the top management objectives of lowering costs of operation were achieved. He used a no-nonsense bureaucratic approach in directing and controlling the employees. He introduced the use of performance measurement standards to measure efficiency and performance of employees. This method measures employee performance based on the number of calls or customers that they handle per hour. This approach emphasizes on working speeds of subordinates, and requires them to handle as many customers as possible during their working time. This method would help to reduce the number of employees being employed in the department. His method also introduced a regulation requiring employees to work in monitored schedules. He ensured that employees spent minimal time on each customer they attend to with an objective of reducing call hold time. This method was completely different from the previously used method, which the employees were used to. Through Rasmussen’s method, the company achieved its objective of efficiency and non-flexible scheduling and cutting back on costs associated with employees. A leader should focus on being in charge of command, organizing and directing, setting processes in motion, and being the reason for others to act or change (Scouler and Chapman, 2012). Leadership styles are classifications of the leader ’s behavior in performance of their duties, during our study of the Mountain West Health Plans Inc’s customer service department; we identified several leadership issues, which are highlighted below. Firstly, there is no connection between the leader and the employees (Hendricks, n.d). We found that the leader does not understand the needs

Personal statement for admission Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Personal statement for admission - Essay Example I have always been interested in finance and made some of my college money trading on futures stock and the forex market. I interned at a family owned home appliance business and was able to observe some of the aspects covered in quantitative finance. On graduation from college, I was employed by HSBC private bank, working there for four great years. I believe my appreciation for Quantitative Finance was cemented there, as I was able to observe multi-national organizations and their take on finance derivatives. However, although I enjoyed corporate finance, financial engineering remained my passion. My best friend and I, therefore, left the bank mid last year to start a privately owned company, VevoTrader. I believe I have acquired sufficient experience as a professional to enroll for a master’s degree that hones my quantitative skills. With academic qualifications analysis, calculus and linear algebra, as well as experience in linear and differential algebra, C++ programming, and statistics, I believe this is the only logical step. I hope to get exposure to best practices and current techniques, and a derivatives market theory expert to push our company forward. My partner and I have been unsatisfied with the extent of derivative instrument use in Hong Kong. The current system is almost a copy of the US one, despite the differences in law regimes. We also took issue with the number of experts to work within the HK derivatives market. In fact, no university offers quantitative financial engineering at master’s or Ph.D. level. This is one of the reasons why I have applied for the program at Stanford University. I also would love to be accepted at Stanford for the internship, faculty, and especially the curriculum. From my research, I found that the curriculum offers broad mathematical studies that should be of much use to my prospective clients. I believe the curriculum offers me the opportunity

To what extent is the incorporation of state owned commercial banks Essay

To what extent is the incorporation of state owned commercial banks improved the efficiency of the Chinese banking system - Essay Example Since China gets more structured with the globe, because of these measures banking system of China now has turn out to be high-ranking in the global financial markets, corroborated by the rapid development of economy of China. The banking system of China is viewed as successful during the situation of financial crisis in 2008. Now, 3 drifted banks of China namely Bank of China (BOC), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and China Construction Bank (CCB) are the biggest banks in terms of market value following the financial crisis which ruined many European and American banks. During 1990, many experimental and theoretical studies have analysed the chances and challenges that banking sector of China face (Chapman & Marshall, 2012). An important study regarding the Chinese Banking industry in the broader perspective of agreement of China with World Trade Organization (WTO) and economic transformation is extremely important (Chapman & Marshall, 2012). Discussion In 1980s, vari ous banks of Latin American countries face crises. Lots of nations carry out a many steps to restructuring their misfunctioned banking industry, including fiscal relaxation and strengthened dictatorial regimes. Mostly these transformations were productive in strengthening banking industry and avoiding banking crisis. Transparent and imprudent authoritarian and administrative models played a significant role in the successful states (Wang, 2009). In 1978, in Chinese banking system the process of reformation was began with the establishment of the BOC and CCB. During last 3 decades, different measures of restructuring have been beginning piecemeal in order to strengthen the competitiveness and effectiveness of the domestic banks in China, particularly the state-owned commercial banks. Even so, the steps that have been carried out don’t give the required results. In 2004, official figures shows that the ratio of non-performing loans in the Chinese big four state-owned commercial banks that remained at 2.5 trillion Yuan (equal to three trillion US dollars at recent rate of exchange), was fifteen percent of the entire bank loans (Wang, 2009). This official estimation is viewed as to be undervaluing due to the oblique system of rating system. The ineffective operational mechanism, distribution system, and personnel management system result in failure of several significant restructuring steps. Therefore Chinese banking system requires a complete shakeup. Size and Structure of the Chinese Banking System During the last decade, the banking sector of China is greater in size comparative to the economy of China and has expanded drastically. Entire assets of Chinese banking system (as well as assets that are present in the international subsidiaries and branches of Chinese banks) were approximately equal to two hundred and forty percent of GDP at the end of 2011 which increase from two hundred percent that were in early period of 2000, however, from GDP domestic c redit is estimated to be equal to one hundred and forty five percent (Chapman & Marshall, 2012). This ratio of credit-to- GDP is high comparative to states in which the per capita income is at equal levels. Intermediated credits are much developed

Introduction&background part of three museums Essay

Introduction&background part of three museums - Essay Example regarded as a full permanent, Hirshorn operates on seasonal hours with the museum opening from 10am-5:30pm, the plaza opening from 7:30am-5:30pm, and the Garden operating from 7:30am to dusk. An international modern and contemporary art and culture center, Hirshorn’s target market includes sculpture enthusiasts, art students, and artists. Although primarily funded by the federal government, Joseph Hirshorn contributed $1 million to the Smithsonian Institution and the money was channeled towards the construction of the Hirshorn building. The museum does not charge any admission fee. Despite being located close to Smithsonian metro and National mall, the museum’s accessibility can be termed as poor as it has no parking facility while street parking outside the museum is limited (Hirshorn, 2014). The Smithsonian American Art is a museum owned by Smithsonian Institution and that features permanent collections including 19th century African American and Latin art works. The museum prides as the first federal art collection and includes a collection that captures the aspirations, character, and imagination of the American people. The museum’s collection is presented in six collections that include among others the ‘American experience’ and the ‘American art through 1940’ (Altshuler, 2007). The museum’s target market includes DC students, local artists, and families that visit the center. Funding for the museum was mainly from the Smithsonian trust funds obtained from both private sources and Smithsonian Enterprise. The museum is highly accessible with well-labeled elevators and stairs and adequate benches. Additionally, availability of enough research and street parking space coupled with close proximity to Metro Center and Gallery Place Metros makes it possible for the museum to accommodate large numbers of visitors. Similar to Hirshorn, admission to Smithsonian American Art is free (Smithsonian American Art Museum, 2014). Phillips Collection is a
